REACH - Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals

REACH and its goals

On 1 June 2007, the new chemical legislation – REACH (REGULATION of the EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT and of the COUNCIL (EC) No 1907/2006 of 18 December 2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) came into force.

This Regulation should ensure a high level of protection of human health and the environment as well as facilitate the free movement of substances, on their own, in preparations and in articles, while enhancing competitiveness and innovation. This Regulation should also promote the development of alternative methods for the assessment of hazards of substances. The Regulation is based on the principle that industry should manufacture, import or use substances or place them on the market with such responsibility and care as may be required to ensure that, under reasonably foreseeable conditions, human health and environment are not adversely affected.

All available and important data on substances on their own, in preparations and articles, which shall enable to identify their hazard properties, should be collected and in the supply chain recommendations concerning risk management measures to avoid adverse effect on human health and environment should be systematically provided according to real needs.
